Public Presentation of the Results of the Survey “How Does the Community Rate the Situation of Human Rights in Lithuania?”

Today, in the BNS Press Conference Room, the HRMI has announced the results of the public survey confirming that the issues of human rights are important to the Lithuanian community. The survey has evaluated the institutions that violate human rights to the broadest extent, the human rights that are violated most often and the social groups that are most discriminated.

Guilty Until Proven Innocent: 2004 Human Rights Setbacks

HRMI commemorated International Human Rights Day today by announcing awards for institutions and public officials who contributed to setbacks in the name of human rights protection. Top prize went to Deputy Prosecutor General Gintaras Jasaitis for his infamous phrase: "Termination of a criminal prosecution does not mean that the defendant is not guilty".

HRMI Executive Director Henrikas Mickevicius confronted the Mayor of Vilnius, A. Zuokas, over "deep concern" about municipal policies authorizing the destruction of Roma settlements this month in the live discussion program, “Public Interest”, on national television.

HRMI appeals to Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus not to sign a ratified EU Constitutional Treaty into law

HRMI asked President Adamkus not to sign the act of ratification by Lithuanian Parliament of the EU Constitutional Treaty. The human rights watchdog requested a conclusion of the Constitutional Court on whether the Treaty and its ratification procedure comply with the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania.
