On August 1, 2008 participants of the first International Human Rights Studies Programme have received certificates of completion.
The pilot Programme, which took place at the premises of Mykolas Romeris University between July 23 – August 1, has been a product of cooperation between three academic institutions and two NGOs from three countries - Mykolas Romeris University in Lithuania, Elon University‘s Center for Public Affairs in North Carolina (USA), European Humanities University of Belarus, Bring Human Rights Home, Inc. located in Michigan (USA), and Human Rights Monitoring Institute.
21 students from Belarus, USA and Lithuania have attended lectures, seminars and workshops conducted by academicians and human rights practitioners from Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States of America, Lithuania, and Belarus. As the programme has been oriented towards practical application of the international human rights law, an interactive classroom instruction has been combined with field work, off-site experiential visits and case studies. The last two days of the Programme have been devoted to the Moot Court exercise.
Off-site experiential programme has included visits to the Office of Ombudsperson for Equal Opportunities, the Office of Ombudsperson for the Rights of the Child, the Mission of European Commission in Lithuania, the Refugee Center, and the Genocide Museum.
Encouraged by the success of the pilot Programme, project partners have agreed to continue cooperation.
