HRMI Launches the Annual Human Rights Awareness Month

Programme of Human Rights Awareness Month 2007 includes discussions with representatives of civil society and media, politicians and state officials.  
 
On the 7th of December a discussion organized by Human Rights Monitoring Institute and Lithuanian Centre of Journalism is to open the series of events designed to draw public attention to human rights and increase the human rights awareness in Lithuanian society (see the detailed programme of the month in the section Human Rights Awareness Month).

The conference “Disability in the Lithuanian Cultural Context” held at the Vilnius municipality in which HRMI will participate as a partner will follow on the same day. HRMI will host the demonstration of a documentary regarding the shortcomings in adaptation of the physical environment to the needs of the disabled in Lithuania, followed by comments.

In commemoration of the International Human Rights Day, on the 10th of December at 07:00 a.m. during the life national TV show “Good morning” HRMI will present the Annual Human Rights Award for 2007. In 2006, the first Annual Human Rights Champion award was given to the former employee of Krekenavos Agrofirma Dalia Budrevičienė, who was fired and prosecuted for going public with information about illegal payment practices by her employer.

A discussion “Lessons of the case L vs. Lithuania” organized by HRMI and ELSA Lithuania will take place on the 12th of December. The point of the debate is to analyze legal, political and social implications of the recent decision by European Court of Human Rights in the case L against Lithuania.

The Human Rights Awareness Month includes series of discussions in various regions of Lithuania in cooperation with the local CIVITAS Clubs.
