On 29 June, upon invitation by the Legal Affairs Committee the Human Rights Monitoring Institute presented its annual human rights overview to the members of Lithuanian Parliament.
Kęstutis Čilinskas, Chair of HRMI Board, and Jolanta Samuolytė, Research Director, presented the main findings of the overview. Adddressing legislators, they emphasized problems related to the legislative framework for the protection of human rights. Presentations were followed by questions by MPs and the open discussion that concentrated on the right to respect for private life, the right to freedom of speech, the right to fair trial, and on issues related to discrimination and intolerance. Special attention was paid to problems related to the legislation governing the legal incapacitation of mentally disabled.
Julius Sabatauskas, Chair of the Legal Affairs Committee, expressed his concern about the problems highlighted in the Overview, upon his proposal was agreed to set up a working group to address identified problems through legislative amendments. Besides MPs, representing the Legal Affairs Committee and representatives of HRMI, the working group will include MPs belonging to the Committee on Human Rights. Human Rights Overview was presented to the members of the Committee on Human Rights on 20 June 2007.
