For the second year in a row, HRMI announced December as the Human Rights Awareness Month and organized a series of events and actions. The primary target of this year’s awareness raising campaign is Lithuanian youth. HRMI believes that enhancing the ability of young Lithuanians to understand and use human rights is the most efficient means for the consolidation of democracy.
A national essay competition for high school students that began on October 20th opened the marathon of events within Human Rights Awareness Month 2006. The essay theme is “How can I contribute to enhancing respect for human rights in my community?”. For the project details see here (in Lithuanian).
Among other planned activities within the Human Rights Awareness Month are:
• A series of discussions with representatives of local communities around Lithuania;
• Students' conferences;
• A film festival;
• A presentation of the results of the public opinion poll on the state of human rights in Lithuania;
• First Annual Award “Human Rights Champion of the Year”;
• Publication of the annual list of the most outstanding human rights offenders among public officials and/or institutions.
Updated information about the events - schedules, places and times, partners and supporters -will be posted on this website.
HRMI expresses its gratitude for the generous support provided for the project by the Dutch Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
