HRMI briefs international community on current trends in human rights

On May 17, 2005 HRMI invited members of Vilnius-based diplomatic community, representatives of international business and associations to present findings of Human Rights Overview 2004.  
 
Ambassadors, embasy officers, representatives of foreign business and other prominent members of international community in Lithuania attended the event. Discussion focused on the right to political participation, right to respect for private life, right to fair trial, discrimination and intolerance as well as children's rights. Foreign residents emphasized inefficiency of legal mechanisms to protect human rights and resolve disputes, including the court system.
 
Members of international comunity expressed their concern with the worsened level of human rigths protection and discussed possible ways to address outstanding problems. It was concluded that international community has a role to play in enhancing human rights standards in Lithuania.
