HRMI appeals to Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus not to sign a ratified EU Constitutional Treaty into law

2004 11 18

HRMI asked President Adamkus not to sign the act of ratification by Lithuanian Parliament of the EU Constitutional Treaty. The human rights watchdog requested a conclusion of the Constitutional Court on whether the Treaty and its ratification procedure comply with the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania.

In a release today, HRMI pointed out that Member States, which ratify this Constitutional Treaty, agree to transfer to the EU additional powers and therefore a part of their sovereignty. In these cases the Law on Referendum prescribes mandatory referenda. Moreover, ratification of the treaty in ten days after it was signed in Rome demonstrates disrepect of popular opinion and antidemocratic tendencies among political elites.

The text of the appeal was sent to the President and publicized through main information agencies.
