Speaking before the Parliamentary Committee, Kęstutis Čilinskas, the HRMI Chair of the Board, and Henrikas Mickevičius, the Executive Director, expressed their doubts about the recently introduced restrictions on the privacy in personal telephone communications.
Mr Mickevičius maintains that the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms has been thus violated since the contents of telephone conversations of impeached President R. Paksas and the Parliamentarians suspected of corruption were made public. This statement is supported by the references to case-law of the European Court of Human Rights.
Liudvika Meškauskaitė, a Member of the Executive Board of the Lithuanian Lawyers Association Board, and Petras Ragauskas, the Deputy Director the Law Institute, also participated in the discussion.
