Request to Meet Egle Kusaite – Rejected

2010 07 10

Prosecutor Justas Laucius denied HRMI a meeting with a terrorist suspect Egle Kusaite. Henrikas Mickevičius was not permitted to meet the young woman that has allegedly been interrogated by Russian Federal Security Service applying coercion and violence. Other alleged human rights violations, including the right to counsel, have been reported by media in her case.

In his response to the meeting request, the prosecutor eliminated any possibility to meet with the suspect and submitted that "these actions are regarded as attempts to interfere with the prosecutors' professional activities and are directly prohibited by law." (For full answer by the prosecutor (in Lithuanian) look here).

Darius Valys, the Prosecutor General, could not explain his subordinate's decision in his interview with the LNK News (national TV channel). (For more information please see news portals DELFI bei Alfa.lt).

Egle Kusaite has been detained in Lukiškės Prison since October 2009 under indictment of intent to commit a terror act.
