Seminar on Freedom of Assembly

2010 07 02

HRMI organized a one-day training for public servants of Vilnius Municipality and police officers on the right to freedom of assembly.

Financial crisis, economic recession and the socio-economic reforms have stimulated different societal groups to exercise their right to freedom of assembly. Increasingly, they become aware of their constitional right to peaceful meetings and publicly express their position, most commonly – a protest. Although the State is under positive obligation to ensure the enjoyment of the right to freedom of assembly, public servants and police officers lack both knowledge and experience in securing the implementation of this political right so vital for a democracy.

HRMI in collaboration with Vilnius Municipality held a seminar for civil servants and police officers "The Right to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly: Legal Standards and Practical Implementation". During the seminar a group of experts introduced the international standards, Lithuanian legislation and case law relevant to the right to freedom of peaceful assembly. .
