In celebration of Data Protection Day in Europe on the 28th of January, Human Rights Monitoring Institute published a study on video surveillance, entitled “The Right to Respect for Private Life: the use of video surveillance in Lithuania”. The study aimed to review and evaluate the use of video surveillance cameras and its legal regulation.

Today Human Rights Monitoring Institute together with 49 NGOs worldwide signed the letters expressing their concern regarding the continued incarceration of Azimjon Askarov, an active human rights defender.

On 25 November, 2011, a consortium of six non-governmental organisations, including Human Rights Monitoring Institute, presented their submissions to the European Commission and European Parliament on the Green Paper on the Application of EU Criminal Justice Legislation in the Field of Detention.

On 16 December, Human Rights Monitoring Institute in partnership with the Ministry of Justice and Lithuanian Bar Association held a conference “Justice in Lithuania: Right or Privilege?” The challenges and perspectives of pro bono legal services and state guaranteed legal aid system were discussed by politicians, State officials, barristers, and representatives of academia and non-governmental sector.

On 4 December, HRMI joined as a founding member the international cooperation platform “Civic Solidarity”, a forum which was established by non-governmental organizations from OSCE region.
